EU leadership intends to face today's challenges together with the continent's religious leaders

The EU leadership stated its intention to establish a strong cooperation with the continent's religious leaders. "Together we will have to meet the challenges faced by our society. This is our common responsibility," the President of the European Commission José Manuel Durão Barroso said at a meeting with representatives of Europe's traditional religions held in Brussels, the official website of the Moscow Patriarchate reports Wednesday.

St. Vladimir's Seminary Men's Choir on the road

Alla Generalow, Director of Liturgical Music at St. Vladimir's Seminary (SVS), conducted the seminary's touring men's choir at two parishes in Maryland on February 21 and 22, 2009. The choir sang at St. Mark Church in Bethesda, MD, a parish within the Orthodox Church in America (OCA), for Vespers, and Ss. Peter and Paul Church in Potomac, MD, a parish within the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America (AOCANA), for Divine Liturgy. The V. Rev. Gregory Safchuk (SVS '82), rector of St. Mark, and the V. Rev. George Rados (SVS '61), rector of SS. Peter and Paul, both are alumni of St. Vladimir's.

Vandals cut pagan graffitti into lawn of Orthodox church

Members of St. George Greek Orthodox Church were shocked to find someone had cut a large pentagram into a one-acre plot adjacent their church. The Very Rev. Constantine Valantasis, pastor, said his parish's plans for a community garden there will not be derailed by the weekend vandalism that has desecrated the space.

Ecumenical gathering in Washington DC in June

The thirteenth annual Orientale Lumen Conference will be held in Washington D.C, June 15-18, 2009. This ecumenical conference will focus on the Christian East and is open to the public, for both lay persons and clergy. The speakers and attendees come from four main religious groups: Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Eastern Catholic and Oriental Orthodox churches. Orientale Lumen XIII will be held at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington, DC and will focus on the theme of "Monastic Spirituality for Everyday Life".

Orthodox Church eyes Maya Indians

Metropolitan Jonah of All America and Canada is looking to students from Moscow with a Russian Orthodox background to work as missionaries among Maya Indians. The proposal was announced in the St. Tikhon's Orthodox University on Saturday, during Metropolitan Jonah's first official visit to Russia, ITAR-TASS reports.
