On 18 March 2026, in the chapel of the residence of the Serbian Patriarchs in Belgrade, His Holiness Serbian Patriarch kyr Porfirije served a memorial service for the repose in the Lord of His Holiness the Patriarch-Catholicos of Tbilisi and All Georgia Ilia.

Concelebrating was Protopresbyter Đorđe Stojisavljević, Head of the Office of the Serbian Patriarch. After the memorial service, His Holiness Patriarch Porfirije sent a message of condolence to the Locum Tenens of the Georgian Patriarchal Throne, the Holy Synod of Bishops, the clergy, monastics, and the entire brotherly Georgian people, which reads:

Finding Ourselves in the midst of the Holy and Great Lent, We have been met with the sorrowful tidings of the repose in Christ of Our beloved brother, His Beatitude Patriarch Ilia, of blessed memory, the unforgettable father and Archpastor of the Georgian people. Yet, not grieving as those without hope (cf. 1 Thess. 4:13), and with faith fixed upon the Resurrection of Christ and life everlasting, in the name of the Pleroma of the Serbian Orthodox Church and in Our own name, We extend expressions of sincere condolences to the assembly of Bishops, the clergy, monastics, and the faithful people of the sister Georgian Church on the repose of her great First Hierarch.

Like a tree planted by streams of water (cf. Ps. 1:3), Our blessed brother Ilia brought forth abundant fruit in his time, while his labor and work have left an indelible spiritual imprint first upon the clergy and faithful entrusted to him, and thereafter poured forth throughout the whole ecumene. From his Christ-like person there shone the image of a true apostle, a guardian of ecclesiastical order and Tradition, as well as the image of a moral pillar for his compatriots, who in complex historical circumstances contributed to spiritual renewal, the strengthening of church life, and the preservation of the identity and traditional values of the Orthodox Georgian people. Of this, among other things, bears witness his unique archpastoral ministry as a sponsor at the baptisms of tens of thousands of children, thereby giving a powerful impetus to the evangelical life of his flock, and becoming for all Christians a city set on a hill (Mt. 5:14) and an example to follow.

May our Lord Jesus Christ, the Resurrection and the Life, grant rest to the soul of His newly departed servant, Patriarch Ilia, in the dwellings of the righteous, where there is neither sickness, nor sorrow, nor sighing, but life everlasting.

Eternal be your memory, worthy of blessedness and everlasting remembrance, Our most blessed brother, Ilia!
